CORPUS DOMINA

BY MARIA CRISPAL

EXPLORE "BIG MATER BANG"

ABOUT

I have thought to unite me as artist to the “Corpus Domina” project.
The Women began the gradual process of emancipation in the 20th century, which led to the recognition of equal rights and the reclaiming of their identities and bodies, following well-known slogans such as It’s my womb and I’ll do what I want with it. An ongoing process of freedom and affirmation that has demolished deep-seated male-dominated and androcentric mentalities.

Deepak Bhagya

In the art, women have always been relegated to the role of muse to male artists, deprived of the possibility of representing or defining themselves. The female artists were given a chance to explore their own bodies with the arrival of the feminist revolution of the 1960s, rediscovering their sexual and procreative alchemical power. An artistic quest that flooded through society and has become integrated to the point that on today’s web.

OVERVIEW

The project takes as its starting point from an analysis of the myths and religions of humanity. This outset allows me to point out certain characteristics of the postmodern era: the synergy between technological development and the return of archaic forms. Synergy, in other words, as a conjunction of the forces of use and technology. Technology does not create use, it sustains and strengthens it. Therefore, I would use the term “cosmic force” rather than cosmic-machine. Clearly the internet is a medium that facilitates communication by and with everyone and in all kinds of microcosms and macrocosms. What new world in gestation? The technological Venus? Could the web-machine be considered a surrogate of the cosmic-machine?

CORPUS DOMINA
Manfredi Edition
(English + Italian)

Maria Bilateral Crispal. Alongside the theme of the feminine, we have the concept of today’s world, which has been radically altered by Internet. The two themes appear to be covertly connected, like communicating vessels. In fact, Maria Crispal speaks of the uterus web and defines herself as the “connected icon”. Internet is set up as an immense, complex and multi-purpose machine/mother. Juxtaposition of the female body and a mechanical device is not new in the history of art.

Deepak Bhagya

After all, the bride stripped bare in Marcel Duchamp’s Large Glass (1915 -23) turned the Great Mother depicted in Gustave Courbet’s L’Origine du Monde (1866) into a machine. Reflecting upon Large Glass, Vettor Pisani built an authentic mechanical device, Lo Scorrevole (1972). Harald Szeemann’s The Bachelor Machines (1975) would come later.
The oracular disposition of Maria Crispal’s work is set in such a way as to allow the community to speak through her, to become a ventriloquial body and let collective thought and discourse pass throught her body.
